CODE RED: Why We Must Talk About Period Poverty
For many women and girls around the world, a period is not just a biological cycle but a monthly struggle for dignity and wellbeing.
At SWAN, we are proud to stand alongside GRT’s CODE RED campaign, a movement that shines a light on the reality of period poverty both in the UK and internationally. CODE RED is not simply a campaign name. It is a call to attention, a signal that too many women and girls are still forced to choose between essential items like food and menstrual products. It reminds us that this is not a niche issue but a public health and human rights concern affecting millions.
In the UK, more than one in five people who menstruate cannot afford period products (Action Aid). That means around 2.8 million women and girls face unnecessary hardship every month. Many have no choice but to keep pads or tampons in for longer than is safe, while others use whatever materials they can find, such as tissues or old clothing. Some have missed school or work because they could not manage their period safely or with dignity. Globally, the situation is even more alarming. Over 1.2 billion people lack access to safe sanitation or menstrual products, and many in refugee camps or low-income communities must use unhygienic materials that put their health at serious risk (World Vision).
The impact of period poverty is both physical and emotional. Prolonged or unsafe menstrual care can lead to infections, skin irritation, and in some cases serious conditions such as toxic shock syndrome. These health risks are often accompanied by mental and emotional struggles. Studies show that women who experience period poverty are more likely to suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, and feelings of shame or isolation. Missing work or school every month can cause lasting damage to confidence and limit future opportunities.
Breaking the silence is the first step towards change. Period poverty thrives where stigma and embarrassment prevent open discussion. Through the CODE RED campaign, SWAN and GRT are determined to challenge these barriers. Together, we are raising awareness, providing menstrual education, distributing essential products, and supporting women and girls to manage their periods safely and confidently. Our shared goal is simple: to make menstrual health a universal right rather than a privilege.
CODE RED is a reminder that this issue affects our communities close to home as much as it does those abroad. Ending period poverty requires compassion, education, and collective action. By speaking up, donating, and supporting initiatives like CODE RED, we can ensure that no one is left behind.
At SWAN, our mission has always been to empower women and promote wellbeing. By supporting CODE RED, you help us give women and girls the tools, knowledge, and dignity they deserve. Together we can create a future where no one has to choose between food and a pad, and where every person who menstruates is able to do so with safety, confidence, and pride.
