Stories of Tawakkul: Musa AS’s First Journey Down the River Nile
The story of Prophet Musa (Alayhi As Salam), the most frequently mentioned individual in the Quran, is a profound tapestry of faith, resilience, and divine intervention. Among the countless inspiring episodes in his life, one of the most touching is the story of his mother’s unwavering trust in Allah when she placed her infant son in the perilous waters of the River Nile.
In a moment of profound faith, the mother of Musa AS received a divine command that would test her trust beyond ordinary limits:
"So We sent this inspiration to the mother of Moses: 'Suckle thy child, but when thou hast fears about him, cast him into the river, but fear not nor grieve: for We shall restore him to thee, and We shall make him one of Our messengers.'" (Quran, 28:7)
For any mother, the thought of parting with her child is heartbreaking. Yet, with the threat of Pharaoh’s decree looming over her, Musa AS’s mother placed her beloved son into the Nile—a river teeming with dangers, guided solely by her faith in Allah’s promise.
Acting on divine inspiration is a profound testament to one’s faith. Musa AS’s mother not only received this inspiration but acted upon it with complete tawakkul (trust in Allah), demonstrating the depth of her belief.
"We had ordained that he would refuse to feed from wet nurses. His sister approached them and said, 'Shall I tell you about a household which could bring him up for you and take good care of him?' We restored him to his mother in this way, so that she might be comforted, not grieve, and know that God’s promise is true, though most of them do not know." (Quran, 28:12-13)
Musa’s sister, sent to follow the floating basket, witnessed a miraculous turn of events. The baby was found and adopted by Asiyah, the compassionate wife of Pharaoh. Allah, in His infinite wisdom, ensured that Musa AS would only accept nourishment from his biological mother. Through this divine plan, Musa AS was returned to his mother’s care, her heart comforted, her faith affirmed.
This poignant story is a testament to reliance on Allah and the strength found in faith. It teaches us that even in the face of unimaginable trials, trusting in Allah’s wisdom and mercy can lead to outcomes beyond our comprehension. Musa AS’s journey down the Nile is a lesson in resilience, faith, and the boundless love of a mother fortified by divine trust.
