Stories of Tawakkul: Prophet Nuh's (AS) Ark of Hope

During the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah, we find profound inspiration in the story of Prophet Nuh Alayhi As Salam (AS) and his unwavering reliance on Allah. Nuh's (AS) deep faith in Allah’s wisdom and justice, even in the face of overwhelming challenges, serves as a powerful reminder of the essence of tawakkul.

For nearly 1,000 years, Nuh (AS) patiently called his people to monotheism, enduring countless hardships and mockery. Allah says,

“And indeed We sent Nuh to his people, and he stayed among them a thousand years less fifty years” (Al-Ankabut 29:14).

Despite the persistent rejection, Nuh (AS) remained steadfast, pleading,

“O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day, but all my calling added nothing but to their flight. Every time I called unto them... they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and magnified themselves in pride... Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and rivers” (Nuh 71:5-12).

When Nuh (AS) called upon Allah amidst the impending flood, he demonstrated his steadfast trust:

“Certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges” (Hud 11:45-46).

Despite the heartbreak of witnessing his people reject the message, Nuh (AS) knew that Allah’s plan was ultimate and perfect, and his plea would not go unheard.

As the floodwaters engulfed the earth, Nuh (AS) remained resolute. Allah commanded the earth to swallow up the water and the sky to cease its rain:

"O earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain)" (Hud 11:44).

The ark came to rest on Mount Judi, symbolizing the end of a tumultuous journey and the beginning of a new era. Through it all, Nuh (AS) relied on Allah’s promise, even when the future seemed uncertain.

Imagine the relief and gratitude Nuh (AS) and his followers must have felt when they disembarked the ark with Allah’s peace and blessings:

"O Nuh! Come down (from the ship) with peace from Us and blessings on you and on the people who are with you" (Hud 11:48).

This moment of deliverance was a testament to the power of unwavering faith, reliance upon Allah by Nuh AS and the mercy of Allah.

Nuh’s (AS) story teaches us the essence of tawakkul—placing complete trust in Allah, especially in our darkest moments. Just as Nuh (AS) held firm in his belief that Allah would guide and protect him, we too must rely on Allah’s wisdom and mercy, no matter the challenges we face. As he built the huge ark and strived to do so he placed his trust in Allah and did not waver even after nearly 1000 years of trying and only seeing a few answer the call to monotheism.

This story reminds us that even when we feel overwhelmed and trapped by our circumstances, Allah’s guidance can lead us to miraculous outcomes.

As we reflect on Nuh’s (AS) journey during Dhul Hijjah, let us strive to embody his steadfast faith. Whether we are performing Hajj or engaging in acts of worship and charity, we can earn Allah’s favor through our unwavering trust and devotion.
