Stories of Tawakkul: When the sea was split
As we continue our journey through the blessed first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, we reflect on the profound story of tawakkul demonstrated by Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel during their escape from the tyranny of Pharaoh. This account, detailed in Surah Ash-Shu'araa (26:52-68), exemplifies the ultimate trust in Allah’s plan and His deliverance.
Then We revealed Our will to Moses, ‘Leave with My servants by night, for you will be pursued!’
Pharaoh and his people pursued them at sunrise, and as soon as the two sides came within sight of one another, Moses’ followers said, ‘We shall definitely be caught.’
Moses said, ‘No, my Lord is with me: He will guide me,’ and We revealed to Moses: ‘Strike the sea with your staff.’ It parted- each side like a mighty mountain- and We brought the others to that place: We saved Moses and all his companions, and drowned the rest.
Allah (SWT) revealed to Musa (AS), "Depart by night with My slaves, verily, you will be pursued." With unwavering faith, Musa (AS) led the Children of Israel out of Egypt under the cover of darkness, fully aware that Pharaoh and his forces would soon follow.
As dawn broke, Pharaoh sent his messengers across the land, rallying his troops with the message that the fleeing Israelites were a small and rebellious band. Confident in their strength, Pharaoh's army set out in pursuit, leaving behind their lush gardens, springs, treasures, and honorable places. Unbeknownst to them, this was all part of Allah’s divine plan to liberate the Children of Israel and to demonstrate His might and mercy.
At sunrise, the two groups saw each other. The Israelites, trapped between the Red Sea and the approaching Egyptian army, were gripped with fear. They exclaimed, "We are sure to be overtaken." In this moment of despair, Musa (AS) displayed profound tawakkul. He reassured them, saying, "Nay, verily, with me is my Lord. He will guide me."
In response to Musa’s (AS) unwavering trust, Allah commanded him to strike the sea with his staff. As he did so, the sea parted, each side rising like a towering mountain, creating a path of escape for the Israelites. Musa (AS) led his people across safely, while Pharaoh’s army, in their arrogance, followed them into the sea.
As soon as the Israelites reached safety, the sea returned to its original state, drowning Pharaoh and his forces. This miraculous event not only saved the Children of Israel but also served as a powerful sign of Allah's supremacy and mercy. "Verily, in this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers. And verily, your Lord, He is truly, the All‑Mighty, the Most Merciful."
The story of Prophet Musa (AS) teaches us the essence of tawakkul — complete trust in Allah even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. Musa (AS) did not waver when his people doubted; instead, he placed his faith in Allah's guidance and deliverance. This story reminds us that, in our own lives, no matter how dire our circumstances may seem, unwavering trust in Allah can lead to miraculous outcomes.
As we reflect on this story during the sacred days of Dhul Hijjah, let us strive to emulate the tawakkul of Musa (AS). These days are a reminder of Allah’s immense blessings and mercy. Whether or not we are performing Hajj, we can still earn Allah’s favor through our acts of worship, charity, and steadfast faith.
